The States uses live music, spoken word, sculpture, video and hand-made screens to create an immersive environment that puts the audience in the middle of the action.
Taking recent political, economic, and cultural developments in the US along with a number of iconic moments as the basis for the piece, the three artists reinforce, subvert, and reshape their subjects into surprising interarts mashups.
The States is the third multi-media collaboration by Brisbane composer Erik Griswold, Darwin artist Sarah Pirrie and American-New Zealand writer Craig Foltz.
Building on their previous works Other Planes (2000) and Permanent Transit (2002), The States explores themes of globalization, dislocation and identity from an expatriate point of view.
