Join us for two very special concerts next week. World renowned Chilean singer songerwriter Nano Stern performs for the first time in Brisbane on Wed 7 April, while Zulya and the Children of the Underground returns to the stage on Sun 11 April.
Since launching onto the Australian stage at Woodford Folk Festival in 2007/2008, Nano Stern has attracted critical acclaim across the country for his gorgeous blend of traditional Latin American, European folk, rock and jazz music.
"exudes authenticity and the sheer love of making music... one of the concert highlights of the year" The Age, 2009
Nano returns to Australia this April to launch his third self-produced album, Los Espejos, which was ranked #3 by Chile's Rolling Stone in their top 100 albums for 2009. We welcome Nano direct from Chile, where he has been lending physical aid and performing at benefit concerts in the wake of the country’s devastating earthquake. ARIA Award winning band Zulya and the Children of the Underground are also touring the country to launch a new album. Tales of Subliming combines the melancholy, beauty and drama of Zulya’s song writing and the extraordinary musicianship of her collaborators.
You may know Zulya from her guest performances with Doch Gypsy Orchestra, Women in Voice and her last concert at Judith Wright Centre in 2007. And if you've seen Zulya before you'll know what all the fuss is about. Her haunting gypsy sound encapsulates elements of Russian folk music and contemporary European jazz, and her stage presence is compelling.
"What strikes you immediately is not just the confident purity of Zulya's voice, but the quality of writing and arranging... Swinging like a Bolshevik Marlene Dietrich, Zulya and the Children of the Underground...(strikes) a deft balance between melancholic sadness and unbridled joy" SONGLINES, UK
Zulya regularly performs at festivals and venues across the country including Sydney Opera House, WOMADelaide and Woodford Folk Festival among others. This is your chance to catch Zulya and the Children of the Underground in Brisbane.
