James Sherlock is a Kiwi-born, Australian-bred classical guitar virtuoso. Returning to Brisbane to launch his new, self-titled solo album, Sherlock takes to the stage with the West End Composers Collective to deliver an entertaining evening of jazz.
Formed in 2003 as a monthly gathering for Brisbane’s creative improvising musicians, composers and arrangers to workshop original material, the West End Composers Collective has toured throughout Australia appearing at venues and feativals Australia-wide. They have recorded two albums of original material Downstream and Driving Hat, both released on the Pinnacles Music Label. Collectively the group is highly decorated, with members Hannah Macklin and Steve Newcomb recently received a 2009 QSong Award (Jazz) with their song Walls, and Rafael Karlen being one of 36 Australian artists recently awarded a Jump mentorship to work under reknowned jazz musician and composer Mike Nock.
Sherlock began playing classical guitar at age seven and has been the recipient of such prestigious awards as the Freedman Fellowship in 2007 and the 1997 Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award. He is currently a guitar teacher at both the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and Queensland University of Technology who somehow also manages to fit in touring to international festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival and Christchurch International Jazz Festival.
Seeing Sherlock and the West End Composers Collective live together is an opportunity not to be missed!
